This policy describes what Major Tom actually does today. Where something is planned but not yet running, it says so rather than describing it as though it were live.
Your email address, if you subscribe to the daily brief. We collect it because you typed it into the signup form, and we use it to send the brief and nothing else. Every email carries an unsubscribe link.
We keep your address for as long as you are subscribed. If you unsubscribe we stop sending immediately, and we keep your address on a do-not-contact record so that you are not added back by mistake if a list is ever imported again. That record exists only to keep you off the list and is never used to contact you. If you would rather we erased it entirely, ask and we will.
What you send us. If you email us or use a form on the site, we keep the message and your address so we can reply and so we have a record of the exchange.
Usage analytics. We run a self-hosted Umami instance on our own infrastructure. It records page views, referrer, approximate country, browser and screen size. It does not set cookies, does not track you across other websites, and does not build a profile of you. We use it to see which pages people read.
Security and server logs. Our host and our security plugin record IP addresses and request details in order to block attacks and diagnose faults. These logs are kept for a short period and are not used to analyse individual behaviour.
Two things, deliberately.
Your dashboard layout. Which widgets you pin, their order and their size are stored in your own browser. They do not follow you to another device, and clearing your site data loses them. That is a consequence of not having accounts yet, and the interface says so rather than hiding it.
An uploaded portfolio. If you upload a CSV of holdings on the portfolio page, the file is parsed in your browser. It is not uploaded to us, and by default it is held only for as long as the page is open. If you explicitly choose to keep it, it is stored in your browser's session storage, which is discarded when you close the tab. We never write it to long-term browser storage, because a layout surviving a browser restart is a convenience and someone's positions surviving a browser restart on a shared machine is a disclosure.
When a widget prices your holdings, it requests prices by ticker symbol. Our data service therefore learns which symbols were asked about. It never learns how many shares you hold, what they cost you, or what your positions are worth.
Major Tom does not currently connect to any brokerage account. No such connection exists, and no holdings have been read from one.
We are building this, and because it changes what we hold about you, here is how it will work before it does:
We will update this policy before the first connection is made, not after.
We do not sell personal data. We do not share it with advertisers or data brokers. We do not run third-party advertising or tracking pixels. We do not buy information about our readers in order to enrich a profile of them.
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to a copy of what we hold about you, to have it corrected, to have it deleted, and to object to certain processing. Write to jamie@majortomm.com and we will act on it. We will not charge you for it and we will not make you create an account to ask.
Because so little is held server-side today, most requests are answered quickly: for most readers we hold either nothing at all, or an email address.
Major Tom is not intended for anyone under 18 and we do not knowingly collect information from children.
When this policy changes materially we will change the date at the top and, if you subscribe to the brief, say so in it. We will not make a material change quietly.
